Description

A traditional Sicilian dessert filled with creamy ricotta, candied fruits, and a rich sponge cake, perfect for holiday celebrations.


Ingredients

  • Sponge Cake: 1 pre-made or homemade
  • Ricotta Cheese: 2 cups, whole milk
  • Candied Fruits: 1 cup, mixed
  • Almond Paste: 1/2 cup
  • Sugar: 3/4 cup
  • Vanilla Extract: 1 tsp
  • Orange Zest: 1 tbsp
  • Powdered Sugar: 1 cup

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare cake pan by greasing and flouring it.
  2. In a bowl, beat eggs and sugar until frothy, fold in flour, pour into pan, and bake for 30-35 minutes. Allow to cool completely.
  3. Combine ricotta, candied fruits, almond paste, vanilla, and orange zest in a bowl. Mix until smooth.
  4. Slice the cooled sponge cake in half horizontally. Spread half of the filling on the first layer.
  5. Top with the second layer, then spread the remaining filling on top.
  6. For the glaze, mix powdered sugar with water in a saucepan; gently simmer until smooth.
  7. Pour the glaze over the cake and allow to cool in the refrigerator for at least one hour before serving.
  8. Garnish with additional candied fruits or almonds if desired, then slice and serve.
